(NEWTON, NC -- JUNE 16, 2010) Hickory Motor Speedway is pleased to announce preparations are well underway for one of its marquee events on this year's schedule the 3 rd Annual Dwight Huffman Memorial Race for Charity. The special event will be held on Saturday, July 10.
The race night will honor Dwight Huffman, former HMS track promoter, championship car owner, successful businessman and devoted husband and father.
A legend throughout the short track community, Huffman prepared cars for many racers including Jimmy Spencer, Harry Gant, and 1997 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion Dexter Canipe. After Huffman passed away in a tragic automobile accident in early 2008, his family and friends worked tirelessly to keep his memory alive, establishing this race in his name.
If I could pay everyone a million dollars each for what they have done to honor Dad and my family that still wouldn't be enough, said Ashley Huffman, son of Dwight. I can't put into words what this night means to me and my family.
Ashley Huffman will carry on the Huffman racing legacy during the event as he will be one of the 32 cars competing in the Late Model race
Racing will start at 4 PM, with a 50-lap feature run by the front wheel drive cars from the UCAR-CLASH for CASH Touring Series. A special Arby's 177-lap Bojangles Late Model race will follow with a RIDERSWHOLESALE.com 77-lap Advance Auto Parts Limiteds race closing the night.
Over $28,000 in total prize money will be awarded in the Late Model feature, making it the highest purse for a Late Model race in the 59-year history of HMS. Also competing for a lucrative purse of over $12,000 are the drivers of the Advance Auto Parts Limiteds. Both divisions will run races with unique lap counts designed to honor Huffman as he always fielded a No. 7 car throughout his career.
Fans attending the event will also have the chance to win over $10,000 in cash and prizes throughout the night, starting with a free gift for the first 577 kids and adults to enter the track. In addition, donations will be made to the East Burke, Eastern Catawba and South Caldwell Cooperative Christian Ministries.
Ashley Huffman noted that his dad would not have wanted all of this attention but would have been proud of giving back to the community.
He would be upset because of his face and name being all over the place, said Huffman. But then again, when he would have found out that this event also gave prizes to fans in attendance and especially helped out local charities, he would have really liked that. He always was willing to help anyone.
The first two Dwight Huffman Memorial Race for Charity events were won by Andy Loden and Matt McCall, respectively. Both drivers plan on returning to compete in this year's event along with some of the best drivers from across the southeast.
Advanced Tickets are now on-sale through race day at 12 area Arby's locations. For more information, please visit www.dwighthuffmanmemorial.com .
