McDaniel Captures First Late Model Victory at Hickory Motor Speedway

(Hickory, N.C. July 17, 2011) Fans came out to enjoy a night of fast paced racing action as the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series took to the track for Honda Cars of Hickory Night at the Races presented by The Catawba Science Center on July 16. Austin McDaniel captured his first Bojangles Late Model victory at the 60-year old facility after starting from the outside pole. Tyler Church grabbed the checkers during the Limited Late Model feature and Roger Pitts put on a clinic winning the Street Stock race.  Todd Harrington ran a great race on his way to victory lane, while Dillon Crouch secured a win in the Red Baron Renegades event.

The No. 43 of Jesse LeFevers brought the field to the green flag for the start of the 50-lap Bojangles Late Model feature event, but was quickly challenged by the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel who started on the outside pole. They battled side by side for several laps until McDaniel cleared LeFevers as the two drivers exited turn two heading down the backstretch. McDaniel created a sizable lead over the field until the first caution of the night came out on lap 33 when the No. 57 of Grant Wimbish and the No. 3 of Brian Ortiz made contact in turn two.

McDaniel and LeFevers continued to battle for track position at the restart. With ten laps remaining, McDaniel had created a half of a car length lead over LeFevers. The two continued to run door to door until lap 45 when the second and final caution fell for a five car pile-up in turn two involving Wimbish the No. 5 of Lucas Bize, the No. 4 of Jessica Brunelli, the No. 26 of Nelson Canache and the No. 16 of Clint Fields. It was a five lap shootout when the field resumed green-flag racing. McDaniel was able to hold LeFevers off to capture his first career Late Model victory at Hickory Motor Speedway. The No. 19 of Kyle Moon, the No. 35 of Devin Jones and the No. 88 of Josh Wright rounded out the top five.

Matt Piercy, driver of the No. 11, secured the pole position for the start of the Limited Late Model race. The No. 69 of Trevor Hignutt quickly slid around Piercy taking over the lead on the second lap. As Hignutt pulled out front the No. 07 of Tyler Church crept up on Piercy challenging him for second. Half way through the event, Church made his way around Piercy and set his sights on Hignutt and the lead. With 15 laps remaining Church captured the lead from Hignutt and checked out. As the end of the race drew near, Piercy made his way around Hignutt regaining the second position opening the door for the No. 90 of Pietro Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi slid around Hignutt during the final laps taking over third, leaving Hignutt to finish fourth. The No. 51 of Waylon Flynn completed the top five.

The No. 12 of Roger Pitts put on a clinic during the Street Stock event. Pitts qualified on the pole and went on to lead all 30 laps of the race. As Pitts and the No. 03 of Kevin Eby pulled away from the field they left behind the No. 64 of Marshall Sutton and the No. 5 of Mike Newton to battle for third. Sutton slowly pulled out front of Newton, leaving Newton a prime target for the No. 22 of Dan Moore. Late In the race Moore made his way to Newton's bumper and took over the fourth spot coming out of turn two. With less than five laps remaining Moore pulled under Sutton and settled into third leaving Sutton to finish the race fourth. Newton completed the race in the fifth position.

The No. 21 of Todd Harrington brought the field to the green flag during the 25 lap 4-Cylinder event. Harrington led the field until lap six when the first caution waved. Harrington missed his marks on the restart allowing the field to get around him leaving the No. 3 of Donnie Harmon in the lead. As the field came out of turn two the No. 8 of Chandler LeVan moved out front as he and Harmon headed out of turn four. Harrington made a run and powered towards the front making his way back into the fourth position when the second caution came out on lap 17. The third and final caution followed shortly after coming out on lap 19. At the restart Harrington continued towards the front moving into second. With five laps remaining Harrington took back the lead from LeVan as the two headed out of turn four. Harrington would grab the checkers leaving LeVan, Harmon, the No. 51 of Nathaniel Kanupp and the No. 99 of Vincent Campbell to round out the top five.

The No. 5 of Dillon Crouch started on the pole and led all 20 laps of the Red Baron Renegade race. Crouch left the No. 16 of Carroll McKinney and the No. 75 of Trey Pitts behind to battle for second throughout the race. McKinney was able to hold of Pitts until the checkers waved leaving Pitts to come home with a solid third place finish. The No. 8 of Kenneth Roberts and the No. 7 of Brad Nelson completed the top five.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will be back in action next Saturday, July 23 as Hickory Motor Speedway celebrates its 60th Anniversary. The night, sponsored by Pepsi, will include appearances by the Limited Late Models, Super Trucks, Street Stocks and a special 60-lap feature for the Bojangles Late Models.
