CANIPE JR. CONTINUES TO DOMINATE, TAKING HOME THIRD WIN OF THE SEASON
(Hickory, N.C. – July 9, 2011) – Racing returned to Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night as Dexter Canipe Jr. continued to dominate, taking home the checkered flag in the Bojangles Late Model division for the third time this season. Waylon Flynn won the Limited Late Model race while Brandon Setzer (Super Trucks) and Dillon Crouch (Red Baron Renegades) took the checkered flag in their respective divisions.
The No. 5 of Dexter Canipe Jr. started on the pole for the Bojangles Late Model race. The No. 43 of Jesse LeFevers quickly challenged for the lead, racing side-by-side with Canipe Jr. and making the pass for first on lap 7. LeFevers was unable to hold onto the lead, however, as Canipe Jr. retook first on lap 12. The No. 7 of Ashley Huffman made the pass for second on lap 15 followed by the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel. LeFevers continued to fall back to the sixth position by the end of the night. Canipe Jr. won the caution-free race followed by Ashley Huffman and Austin McDaniel.
The No. 11 of Matt Piercy led the Limited Late Models to the green flag, but quickly lost the lead to the No. 51 of Waylon Flynn on lap 1. Early in the race the No. 21 of Monty Cox looked into the inside for third, finally making the pass on lap 18. The No. 72 of Jason Cochran made contact with the No. 18 of Casey Pierce on lap 24, bringing out the first caution of the night. After the restart, the field was quick to settle down until the final caution fell on lap 30 with the No. 07 of Tyler Church, the No. 90 of Pietro Fittipaldi and Cochran all involved. Flynn held his position on the restart going on to win the race followed closely by Matt Piercy and Monty Cox.
The Super Trucks fell into position at the start of the race with the No. 12 of Clint Fields leading the field. The first caution of the race fell on lap 12 as the No. 07 of Jacob Marlowe spun in turn 1. Using the restart to his advantage, the No. 09 of Mark Johnson quickly challenged Fields for the lead. During the battle, Fields was involved in a single truck spin on lap 14, but was able to save his truck from any damage. Once racing resumed, Fields powered through the field, moving into third on lap 23. With debris on the backstretch, the last caution of the race fell on lap 31. The No. 6 of Brandon Setzer challenged Mark Johnson for the lead, racing door-to-door to the checkered flag. Setzer edged out Johnson to take the win. Mark Johnson finished second followed by Clint Fields in third.
The Red Baron Renegades were first to hit the track as the No. 5 of Dillon Crouch led the race from start to finish. The first caution came on lap 11 as the No. 14 of Eddie Russ, the No. 8 of Kenneth Roberts and the No. 71 of Kyle DiVanna spun coming out of turn 1. Racing quickly resumed and Crouch continued to pull away from the field until the second caution of the night came on lap 17 due to a single car spin. Crouch took the checkered flag with the No. 4 of Greg Austin in second and Eddie Russ in third.
The action will continue next Saturday, July 16 with Honda Cars of Hickory Night presented by the Catawba Science Center. The night will feature the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series with appearances by the Bojangles Late Models, Limited Late Models, Super Trucks, Wrenchrag 4-Cylinders and Red Baron Renegades.
