Berry Captures Second Win for GOLD KING Night at the Races

July 13 & 14th, 2013 By: Penny Horton

Gold King Night at the Races originally scheduled for a one day show turned into a two day event due to rain making moving in late Saturday evening shortly after racing began. Two of the six races scheduled were ran on Saturday, July 13 th. The other four would conclude on Sunday afternoon July 14th.

On Saturday the K & P Construction 4-Cylinders were the first race of the evening with the #4 of Adam Beaver starting on the pole for the event. Beaver took the lead early with the #99 of Matt Elledge and the #51 of Nathaniel Kanupp battling behind him. On lap sixteen, the #3 of Donnie Harmon would come to pit road due with smoke from his car. On lap twenty-one the #98 of Chase Pollard and Kanupp began to race door to door with Pollard getting the advantage on lap twenty-two. At the checkered flag it would be Beaver, Elledge, Pollard, Kanupp and the #21 of Eddie Gilbert.

Next up would be the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models with track points leader Shane Lee in the #00 starting on the pole and the #09 of Kyle Mansch on the outside. Action would begin early on lap six when the #7 of Drew Heissenbuttel loses a wheel and spins in turn two to bring out the first caution. On lap ten the car of Mansch would make a bid for the lead and make the pass. Crossing the line first was Mansch, the #75 of Landon Huffman, the #07 of Josh Bralley, the #18 of Casey Pierce and the #51 of Jeremy Pelfrey.

As a mist began to fall the track workers went to work trying to keep the track dry, However the rain would prevail and the remainder of the events were rescheduled for a 2pm start on Sunday.

The fans that returned for Sundays action would not be disappointed.

The first race scheduled for Sunday's 2pm start would be the Street Stocks. Starting on the pole would be the #64 of Marshall Sutton with the #52 of Don Machutta joining him on the front row. The green flag would wave and Sutton would take the early lead going into one as the car of Machutta had slowed with apparent problems and slowly move to pit road. Meanwhile the #03 of Kevin Eby and the #33 of Mark Whitten would battle for several laps for second place with Eby finally taking the position. On lap twenty, caution would wave for debris in turn three setting up a sprint to the finish. On the restart Sutton and Eby would battle and make contact with Eby taking the lead on lap twenty-eight. Sutton would work hard to regain the lead but at the line it was Eby, Sutton, Whitten, the #5 of Donnie Harmon and the #2 of Larry Mosher.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models race would begin with the #25 of Matt Piercy on the pole with the #12 of Austin McDaniel on the outside. As the green flag waves, Piercy would take the early lead while McDaniel and the #35 of Devin Jones were door to door for second place. By lap eight, McDaniel had regained the second position from Jones as the # 88 of Josh Berry began to work his way to the point. On lap twelve, a three way battle between the #77 of Jeremy Sorel, the #7 of Justin Crider and the #8 of Reid Lanpher would be taking place for the fifth position behind the leaders. Meanwhile up front Piercy continued to lead while Berry would move into second and begin to pressure Piercy. Piercy's car would slip going into turn one, and allow Berry to slip up beside him to battle for the lead. However, Piercy would continue to work hard on the top and after several laps of racing Berry would slip and return to second. Berry would continue to keep the pressure on and would make another bid for the lead and complete the pass on lap forty-two which would set up another battle between Piercy and McDaniel for second. McDaniel would take the second spot and Sorel would follow. At the checkered it would be Berry, McDaniel, Sorel, Piercy and the #5 of Christian Calvo.

Next up would be the Gold King Super Trucks to do battle on their series sponsors night with the #33 of Jeremy Birch on the pole and the #88 of Doug Barnes starting second. Birch would take the lead early for the thirty-five lap and set the early pace. On lap four contact between the #29 of Jason Smith and the #7 of Whitney Lail would bring out the first caution when both trucks spin in turn four. Both trucks would be able to continue racing. Birch would continue to lead the race as the truck of Barnes and the #9 of Lee Queen battle for the second position. Birch would take the checkered flag, followed by Queen, Barnes, the #09 of Spencer Boyd and the #5 of Derrick Mathis.

The #6 of Darren Dickinson started on the pole for the WrenchRags Renegades race. On lap two the #2 of Charlie Neill would take the lead from Dickinson. Dickinson and the #8 of Kenneth Roberts would create their own battle for second. On lap thirteen the #4 of Greg Austin would spin going into turn two bringing out the caution flag. The car of Neill would take the checkered flag, followed by Roberts, Dickinson, Austin, the #16 of Carroll McKinney.
