Travis Swaim Wins "Sam Club" Night at th Races

(August 1st 2015) -The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returned to action this Saturday night for Sam's Club Night at the Races and the on-track action would provide them with a memorable night.

First up for the night would be the mighty 4-Cylinders. Randy Canipe in the #09 would set the fast time and start from the point position with the #16 of Michael Tucker to his outside. Tucker would get a good jump on the start but Canipe would quickly motor back around him and drive on to the win with the field in tow. Tucker would come home 2 nd , Dennis Trivette in the #28 would grab 3 rd , the #17 of Curtis Pardue would come in 4 th , and the #98 of Rob Lewis would round out the top 5.

The always exciting T-Mobile Limited Late Models would hit the track next for their 35 lap feature. Mitch Walker in the #29 would set the hot lap in qualifying and grab his first career pole position at Hickory Motor Speedway while Evan Duggins in the #12 would start to his outside with the second fast time. Walker would grab the lead on the start while the #77 of Travis Byrd would pressure Duggins for 2 nd . After an early race caution the restart would see Walker to the inside and Byrd to the outside. The two drivers seemed inseparable for the next 25 laps with a side-by-side battle that had the fans on their feet and neither driver wanting to give an inch which also allowed Duggins to move within striking distance. Points leader Byrd would ultimately pull ahead with only a few laps to go and drive on to his 6 th win on the season. Walker would grab his career best finish with 2 nd and Duggins would come home 3 rd . Coming back after a hard crash 2 races ago and a blown motor in the last race, Monty Cox in the #21 would take 4 th and Jeremy Pelfrey in the #51 would round out the top 5.

The Street Stocks would take to the track as the sun started to set over The Birthplace of The NASCAR Stars. Cody DeMarmels in the #18 would continue his hot streak by winning the pole for their 35 lap feature and would start inside Charlie Neill in the #2. The pair would battle hard for the top position but DeMarmels would eventually grab the lead and drive on to the victory with Neill taking the runner-up position. After a hard fought side-by-side battle with the #33 of Mark Whitten, Brendan Doyle in the #23 would grab his career best finish at America's Most Famous Short Track with a 3 rd place finish. The #03 of Kevin Eby and the #64 of Marshall Sutton would round out the top 5.

The trucks would hit the track next for the Smokey's Super Trucks 35 lap feature. The #7 of Ashley Huffman would set the fast time and start from the point with Allen Huffman in the #51 on the outside with his best qualifying position in the Smokey's Super Truck Series. Ashley Huffman would jump to the lead while Allen Huffman would be challenged for position by the #36 of Tyler Dayton. The pair would swap the position several times before the race would be settled. Ashley Huffman would take the win with Dayton grabbing 2 nd and Allen Huffman finishing 3 rd . Rounding out the top 5 would be the #10 of Lee Queen and the #15 of Sheflon Clay.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Bojangles Late Models would roll off next for their 75 lap feature race. Qualifying would be as tight as the racing with the top 5 separated by only a .050 of a second. The #75 of Landon Huffman would grab the top spot with Shane Lee in the #00 to his outside, Travis Swaim in the #21 to his rear and the #25 of Matt Piercy filling out the 2 nd row. The battle for the top spot would rage for several laps before Huffman would finally clear Lee. Swaim and Piercy would also do battle to see who could chase down the leaders. Piercy would clear Swaim after several laps and set his sights on the front two. Huffman would continue to lead as Piercy would challenge Lee and get by for 2 nd . As the laps counted down so did the interval between the top two on the track. With 10 to go, both drivers would get up on the wheel and a side-by-side battle would ensue with the fans on their feet. After moving by Lee for 3 rd , Swaim saw this as his opportunity to challenge for the win as well. As each lap clicked off none of the 3 drivers were willing to give an inch. Huffman in the lead, Piercy to his inside, and Swaim peaking to the inside of Piercy. It was looking to set up an epic Hickory Motor Speedway finish. As the trio took the white flag Huffman would lead with Piercy and Swaim close behind. Coming off of turn 2 Piercy would make his move to the inside of Huffman as Swaim would attempt the same move on Piercy. As the trio dove into turn 3 they would run out of real estate and contact would be made, with Huffman losing control. Piercy and Swaim would continue and contact would once again be made coming off of turn 4 but neither would spin and Piercy would beat Swaim back to the line to take the checkered flag and the win, or at least he thought. After a few seconds the decision was made that the race was not over and we would set up for a Green-White-Checker finish, but not until race officials would penalize Piercy and put him to the back of the field for the restart. Now with Huffman and Piercy at the rear of the field, Swaim would restart from the point, Lee to his outside, and Dexter Canipe Jr. in the #5 had snuck into the fray in 3 rd . Swaim would jump to the lead and take the win over Lee in 2 nd and Canipe in 3 rd . Huffman would come back to grab 4 th and Piercy rounded out the top 5.

The Wrench Rags Renegades would close out the night of racing with their 20 lap feature. Kenneth Roberts in the #8 would pace the field after setting the hot lap in qualifying. As the green flag fell Roberts would jump out to the lead while Kyle Divanna in the #71 would grab 2 nd as he would get by Justin Austin in the #4. Divanna would attempt to chase down Roberts but the laps would run out. Roberts would grab the win with Divanna grabbing 2 nd . Rounding out the top 5 would be Austin, Blake Walker in the #09, and the #16 of Randy Truett.
