Crum Claims 39th Annual Bobby Isaac Memorial
presented by Paramount Auto Group at HMS

(September 5th 2015) -On August 14, 1977 Hickory Motor Speedway and the entire racing world lost one of the true legends of the sport, Bobby Isaac. Isaac was a NASCAR Champion, won 37 races at the highest level, still holds the record for most poles in a season, and set 28 land speed records some of which still stand till this day. On Saturday, September 5th, Hickory Motor Speedway honored his memory with the running of the 39th Annual Bobby Isaac Memorial.

First up for the night would be the vintage hotrods of the Classic Sportsman Racing Association. Eddie Gilbert in the #00 would set fast time and start from the point. After a short battle with Bob Hapeman in the #8, Gilbert would nose ahead for good as he would take his first win in the series after also winning in the 4-Cylinder division. Hapeman would finish in the runner up position with Don Fenn in the #8 grabbing 3rd. Bill Webb in the #16 and Larry Benz in the #4 would round out the top 5.

Next up would be the T-Mobile Limited Late Models and their extended 50 lap feature. Travis Byrd in the #77 would take the pole with the hot lap in qualifying with the #55 of Zack Bruenger starting to his outside. As the cars rolled off the front stretch Bruenger would have mechanical issues and come to pit road. Bruenger was able to return to the track but would have to start from the rear. The front row for the initial start would now consist of Byrd to the inside and the #21 of Monty Cox to the outside. As the flag flew both drivers fought hard for the position for several laps until Byrd finally grabbed the spot. Battles raged throughout the field and caution flags flew multiple times as everyone wanted a piece of the action going to the front and throughout the field. Byrd would ultimately hold off all challengers and win his 6th straight. Cox would hold on for 2nd and Mitch Walker in the #29 snatched 3rd. Mark Johnson in the #13 would bounce back from an early trip to pit road to finish 4th and Bradley Weaver in the #2 would round out the top 5.

The Street Stocks would be ready to roll off next with their 30 lap feature. Kevin Townsend in the #10 and Charlie Neill in the #2 would roll off from the front row. The pair would race hard for the top spot with Neill nosing ahead after a few laps. Townsend would make his way back around Neill but contact between the two would send Townsend spinning and send Neill to the pits for the night. Larry Mosher in the #2 would inherit the lead as he was hot on the rear bumper of the leaders when they made contact. Mosher would go on to his 3rd win of the year with Cody Demarmels in the #18 coming close but running out of time and finishing 2nd. Kevin Eby in the #03 would grab 3rd, Brendan Doyle in the #23 taking 4th, and Marshall Sutton in the #64 rounding out the top 5.

The grand finale for the evening would be the 39th Annual running of the Bobby Isaac Memorial 150 lap race for the NASCAR Whelen All-America Series Bojangles Late Models. Qualifying would be tight and see the top three separated by only .041 seconds and the entire field within half of a second. Jake Crum in the #8 would set the hot lap with Josh Berry in the #88 and Matt Piercy in the #25 close behind. The drop of the green flag would see Crum and Berry battle side by side for several laps before Berry, last year's Bobby Isaac winner, would nose ahead and take the lead. Crum would drop another position to the #5 of Dexter Canipe Jr. as he worked his way to the front. Crum would settle in and keep the lead battle within striking distance. With hard racing throughout the pack the #25 of Matt Piercy and the #9 of Charlie Watson would make contact and bring out the caution sending Piercy to the rear of the field. The restart would see Berry once again head to the front with Canipe, Crum, and the #00 of Shane Lee all close in tow. Berry was seemingly driving to his second straight Bobby Isaac Memorial win when a late race caution would bunch the field for one last restart. Crum and the #58 of Tyler Ankrum had both saved just enough rubber to get by Berry in the closing laps as Crum would take his first Bobby Isaac Memorial trophy. Ankrum would have an impressive finish in the 2nd position after starting 7th. An obviously disappointed Berry would hold on to finish 3rd but would take some consolation in the fact that earlier in the week he was tabbed to drive the JR Motorsports #88 at Richmond for the Xfinity race. Travis Swaim in the #21 would bounce back from an 18th starting position to grab the 4th position and Watson would hold on to round out the top 5 after starting 15th and a mid race visit to pit road. The points leaders seemed to be headed in different directions after Piercy's spin and Landon Huffman in the #75 moving towards the front. However, late in the race Huffman's engine began to give up and his lap times did as well. Piercy would make a late race charge and get by Huffman for 8th and was side by side with 3rd place points runner, Lee, for 7th, but Lee would hold on to the position as the flag flew. Even with the possible mechanical issues Huffman would salvage a 9th place finish.

The NASCAR Whelen All-America Series returns to the Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars next Saturday with Gaston Rentals Night at the Races presented by Aqua Vapor featuring the NASCAR Whelen All-America Series Bojangles Late Models, T-Mobile Limited Late Models, Smokey's Super Trucks, Street Stocks, and Classic Sportsman vintage racers will all be in action.
