Dexter Canipe Jr., Winner Round #5
May 28, 2016 - HICKORY, N.C. – The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returned to action at America's Most Famous Short Track with the Woodforest Bank Night at the Races and the 5th Round of the Paramount Kia 'Big 10' Racing Challenge Series for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models.
First up on the agenda for the night's racing action would be the 4-Cylinders. Curtis Pardue in the #17 would start on the pole after setting the fast lap in qualifying. Charlie Neill in the #2 would make an early run to the point and grab the lead but it would be short lived as mechanical problems would sideline him for the remainder of the event. Pardue would be hampered by the incident and have to restart from the rear but he had no intentions of staying there as he would quickly charge back to the front and grab the victory. The #98 of Rob Lewis would get his best finish in the runner-up position. Rodney Trivette in the #6 would make a great run to the finish for third place.
The Limited Late Models would be next up on the track with Jeremy Pelfrey in the #51 pacing the field after setting the fast time in qualifying and points leader Evan Swilling in the #18 starting just to his outside. Swilling would grab the early lead as Pelfrey would continue to look to work his way back to the front. Monty Cox in the #21 would move up into the battle patiently waiting for the front pair to make a mistake. Swilling would prove too strong, and drive on for the win. Pelfrey would hang on and finish just behind in second with Cox to his rear finishing third.
Next up would be the Catawba Realty & Insurance Company Classic Sportsmen vintage hot rods. The ever young, 80 year old, Bill Webb in the #16 would start from the point after setting the fast time in qualifying. Eddie Gilbert in the #95 would challenge early and take the top spot from Webb but would have a rear view mirror filled with the elder statesman of the division as the purple #16 pressed hard for the lead. Webb would see an opening and dive under Gilbert late in the race as the pair would battle side by side for several laps. Webb would finally make the pass and take the checkers with Gilbert close behind for second and Greg Butcher in the #0 would come home in third.
Round #5 of the Paramount Kia 'Big 10' Racing Challenge Series for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Bojangles Late Models would roll off next on the evening. Dexter Canipe Jr. in the #5 would set the fast time and start from the point with the #18 of Casey Pierce to his outside, the #87 of Hayden Woods and #17 of Ryan Millington to his rear. Canipe would grab the early lead but would be unable to shake any of his competitors. The first caution would be brought out when Pierce would slow on the track with mechanical issues. Lengthy repairs on pit road would leave him multiple laps down, and end any hopes of grabbing the win, Pierce would return to the track and move to the front of the pack before returning to pit road and parking for the night. That would be the last serious challenge on the leader as Canipe would drive on to the win and be the first to see the checkers. Hayden Humphrey in the #07 would get his best career Hickory Motor Speedway finish as he would work himself all the way up to second. Wood would have another good run at the Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars as he would join in the front stretch celebration finishing in third.
Closing out the night would be the Street Stocks. Kevin Eby in the #03 would start from top spot after grabbing the pole position. Eby would jump to the lead and seem to be headed back to his winning ways but a late race caution would set up a restart with 3 laps to go. Lining up to his outside would be Kevin Townsend, this week in the #9 instead of his usual #10. Townsend would make the most of the top groove and use the high lane to get around Eby and grab the win. Eby would hold on to the second spot while Eric Evans in the #07 would bring home another top three finishing position with third.
Next week at Hickory Motor Speedway will be Bojangles Famous Chicken & Biscuits Church Night at the Races.
