“ Josh Berry and Ryan Millington take Home Wins In NWAAS Bojangles Late Models”
April 10, 2017 -Advance Auto Parts Night at the Races brought out beautiful weather, a full schedule of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing, and some heavy hitters in hopes of bringing home a win in one or both of the Twin 40s for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models.
The #88 of Josh Berry would assume a familiar position as he would pace qualifying for the premier division and start from the pole for Twin #1 with the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models and he would have Tommy Lemons Jr. in the #27 starting to his outside. As the green flag flew the front row would take off with Berry pulling ahead of Lemons for the lead. The battle from there on back would be nonstop with multiple cars battling for positions until the waning laps of the race. Berry would lead from start to finish and take the checkers with Lemons coming in 2 nd . Justin Johnson in the #44 would work his way into 3 rd place late in the race to grab a podium finish. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models points leader, Ryan Millington in the #76, would come home in 4 th , while the #2 of Cody Haskins would round out the top 5.
The Renegades would roll off next with Darren Dickinson in the #6 pacing the field. Dickinson and the #71 of Kyle DiVanna would dive into turn 1 side by side in the early battle for the lead. Dickinson would nose ahead and drive on to the win over runnerup DiVanna. Ben Campbell in the #69 would finish off a good run coming home in 3rd while the #83 of David Hasson and the #1 of Justin Austin would round out the top 5.
Hitting the track next would be the Paramount Auto Group Limited Late Models with the #51 of Jeremy Pelfrey setting fast time during qualifying and leading the field to green with the #18 of Alex Reece starting to his outside. Pelfrey would take the early lead but would never pull away from Reece who was shadowing in his tire tracks. With about 10 to go Reece would look inside of Pelfrey and make his move. The two wold battle for several laps side by side until Reece would make the pass and move to the point. Reece would hold on for his first Hickory Motor Speedway victory while Pelfrey would have to settle for 2nd. Pat Rachels would grab 3rd after a photo finish of .004 thousandths of a second over Travis Byrd in the #77 who would make his 2017 HMS debut and come home 4th. Monty Cox in the #21 would round out the top 5 with the 5th position.
Mark Whitten in the #77 would lead the field to the green flag in the Cosmo Motors Street Stocks 30 lap race. Whitten and the #18 of Cody DeMarmels would put on a great side by side battle for the first 8 or 9 laps with neither wanting to give an inch. DeMarmels would finally nose ahead and pull into the lead with Whitten giving chase. DeMarmels would hold off the hard charger and be the first to take the checkered flag grabbing another hard earned victory with Whitten coming home in 2 nd . Kevin Eby in the #03 would finish 3 rd , Marshall Sutton in the #64 would finish 4 th , and Trey Buff in the #69 would round out the top 5.
The One Design Super Trucks would hit the track next for their 35 lap feature with the #36 of Tyler Dayton heading the field and Allen Huffman in the #51 to his outside. The front pair would battle hard and often for the lead all throughout the event. Huffman would push hard in the outside groove and take the early lead with Dayton tracking him down. Several cautions would fly keeping the field bunched with the top 6 trucks all in contention for the win. Late in the race the caution would fly as the leaders would tangle and appear to be in trouble but neither truck would spin nor lose position and would restart as they ran the lap before with Huffman leading and Dayton to his outside. Huffman would hold on and take the win, his second at Hickory Motor Speedway, with Dayton finishing 2 nd . Sheflon Clay in the #15 would work his way up to the 3 rd finishing position after starting 5 th . Joey Shuryan in the #30 would come home in 4 th and Charlie Neill would round out the top 5 in 5 th .
Finishing off the night would be the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models in race #2 of the Twin 40 lap features. A 10 car inversion from the finishing order of the first race would put Colby Howard in the #16 on the pole with the #18 of Ty Gibbs starting to his outside. Howard and Gibbs would mix it up briefly but Gibbs would nose ahead and set sail for the early lead. Gibbs would build a 3 second lead as the battle would be for 2 nd and on back. By lap 20 Ryan Millington in the #76 had gotten around for 2 nd place and began to reel in Gibbs. With 10 to go Gibbs' rear view was full of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models points leader, as Millington would make his bid for the lead. With 5 to go the pair would be side by side with Millington to the preferred inside. Millington would finally make the pass and Gibbs would try one last time to retake the lead, but would have to settle for 2 nd as Millington would grab the win and the trip to victory lane. Winner of the first race, Josh Berry in the #88, would have to start 10 th and without benefit of a caution would have a hard time making it back to the front. He would be joined in a side by side battle with Tommy Lemons Jr. in the #27, as the pair would race hard for the final podium finish. At the checkers Berry would grab the 3 rd spot with Lemons finishing 4 th and Cody Haskins in the #2 finishing 5 th once again.
