Hickory Motor Speedway to Host the 35 th Annual Bobby Isaac Memorial

(September 22, 2011—Newton, NC) Hickory Motor Speedway will crown champions this weekend in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stocks, Limited Late Models, and Street Stocks, as they host the 35 th Annual Bobby Isaac Memorial Race this Sunday, September 25 th . Grandstands will open at 1:00 pm, pre race ceremonies at 2:30 pm, with the green flag dropping at 3:00 pm. The Bobby Isaac Memorial “Is a race you don't want to miss” remarked HMS General Manager Kevin Piercy. “It will be 150 laps with the finest Late Model drivers in the country” Piercy concluded. 2011 marks a return as a two day show this weekend featuring the Late Model Stock Cars, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and the Sportsman Racing Classics. The event will begin Saturday September 24 th with practicing and qualifying for all divisions. Sunday September 25 th will feature an on-track autograph session @ 1:30 pm along with a 50-lap Limited Late Model race, 150-lap race featuring the Late Model Stock Cars, 30-lap Street Stocks and the Sportsman Racing Classics. Isaac lost his life after suffering an apparent heart attack during an event at Hickory Motor Speedway. With 25 laps remaining during a Sportman race in August of 1977, Isaac called for a relief driver and collapsed on pit road. Isaac passed away at the hospital the following morning at the age of 45.

About Bobby Isaac:

Born in 1932, in nearby Catawba, N.C., Bobby started his racing career at Hickory Motor Speedway and went on to win NASCAR's highest honors, the 1970 NASCAR Grand National (Sprint Cup) Championship. Isaac's accomplishments include 37 races in the NASCAR Grand National Series, 11 of which came during his championship season in 1970. He earned 50 pole positions during his career in NASCAR's top touring division. 20 of his pole awards were earned during the 1969-racing season. Issac is a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, A.L. and set 28 world speed records, many of which stand to this day.
